Te Ahu a Turanga Alliance Project

Manawatū

Jan 21 – Mid 2025

The Te Ahu a Turanga – Manawatū Tararua Highway is an 11-kilometre-long four-lane highway connecting Ashhurst and Woodville over the Ruahine Ranges following the closure of the Manawatū Gorge Road in 2017. Work included all applications of concrete production including piling, high-strength super structure mixes, shotcrete, and self-compacting concrete with an estimated total of 35,000m³. Higgins Concrete was proud to receive the 2024 Concrete NZ Technical Excellence Award for our innovative work on this demanding project.

Mission Hills

On the hills behind the famous Mission Estate Winery is the site of a residential estate development of over 800 sections, projected to span 10 years. Higgins Concrete is privileged to be involved with this project providing concrete for all civil works as well as floor slabs, driveways, and landscaping.

Cardinal Logistics Stage 1

Auckland

Nov 22-Jul 23

Counties Ready Mix completed a large project for the Cardinal Logistics Distribution Centre in Drury South Crossing, supplying over 12,000m³ of specialised concrete for a state-of-the-art automated storage and retrieval system. The project spanned nine months and required significant quantities of steel fibre, reinforcing bar, and mesh. Stage 2 of the Cardinal building is now underway involving large concrete pours and the construction of a 35-meter-high structure with competition expected in mid 2025.

North Island

2003 – Current

For the last 25 years, Higgins Concrete has been New Zealand’s leading windfarm and mobile batching plant concrete supplier. Having supplied concrete to nearly 400 turbine bases throughout the lower North Island, we have vast experience in pouring large volumes of concrete in the most challenging conditions. Higgins Concrete has multiple mobile plant options that can be deployed for mobile batching operations and no project is impossible with our specialist team. Projects include Te Apiti, Mill Creek, Turitea Stage 1 and 2, Westwind, and Tararua Windfarms.

General Distributors

Manawatū

2020-2021

New Zealand's second-largest supermarket chain, General Distributors, opened its 40,000m2 North Island Distribution Centre in Palmerston North in August 2021. Higgins Concrete completed pour sizes of up to 650m³ twice per week for the post tensioned floor, utilising up to 25 trucks per pour which were sourced from around our business, demonstrating our agility and ability to move for our customers.

Hamilton Street Commercial Centre

Tauranga

Sep 2024

Extensive rebar work, tight confined spaces, and sloping floor were just some of the challenges faced in the early stages of the Hamilton Street Commercial Centre. Extensive planning, correct mix design selection, and working closely with the excellent teams from Watts & Hughes, Pioneer Pumping, and placing by The Concrete People resulted in a great finished product.

Tall Timber Warehousing

Hawkes Bay

2023- 2024

Higgins Concrete supplied the foundation concrete for this 5,500m2 timber structured building. The Glulam portals were fixed to a concrete foundation and the bottom 2 metres filled with self-compacting concrete. Additionally, all access roads, external storage, and parking were concrete supplied by Higgins Concrete totalling 900m³ overall.

Presidential Homes

Manawatū

Mid 2023 – Mid 2024

The Presidential Homes warehouse was built to streamline pre-fabricated homes in a factory for better efficiencies, allowing the business owner to build and sell more residential homes. A total of 3,325m³ of fibre reinforced concrete was delivered to this site. Higgins Concrete fabricated an innovative conveyor belt fibre dosage system to ensure the quality of the fibre mixing was perfect and minimised health and safety risks for dosing steel fibre in large volumes. To ensure the success of this project, two concrete plants were utilised to meet demands, demonstrating our collaborative values.

Project Electron - NZ Steelmill, Glenbrook

Counties Ready Mix supplied 3,000m³ of low-carbon Sustaincrete™ for NZ Steel's Electric Arc Furnace Project, including an 823m³ slab pour. The Sustaincrete™ mix, featuring 30% fly ash, reduced the project's environmental impact while maintaining durability. This effort significantly supports NZ Steel's sustainability goals and reduces their carbon footprint.

After Cyclone Gabrielle washed away this rural roadway, this project has been working to construct a new culvert, big enough to drive a double decker bus through! Higgins Concrete was also contracted by Lattey Civil for the piles first, then to help another concrete supplier deliver specialty lightweight mixes and standard mixes to the project.
